Didn’t get the laptop on your holiday wish list this year? If not and you are planning to start the New Year with a new laptop, consider these recommendations from www.cnet.com:
- Lenovo Y50 Touch
- Acer Chromebook 13
- Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display
- Microsoft Surface Pro 3
- Lenova Yoga 3 Pro
These laptop prices range from $330 to $1900, with the Acer Chromebook on the low end range and the Apple MacBook Pro on the upper end. Cnet is a good resource for reviews on all types of electronics and provides reviews on these laptops and more on their site.
But how do you know what kind of laptop is best for you? Without getting into the PC versus Mac debate, let’s look at the three rules cnet suggests buyers consider when deciding what kind of laptop is best for them:
- Don’t buy too much laptop – unless you are a die-hard Apple user, you should be able to get all the laptop power you need for under $1000. Anything more is overkill for most users.
- Consider travel time – how often do you plan to take your laptop with you? Any more than three times a week and you will want to make the portability of the laptop a higher priority. While the ultra-thin models are nice for transporting, you might also want to consider whether your laptop will be replacing your desktop. If so, you might still want to consider a larger screen and sacrifice portability.
- Favor design over specifications – cnet suggests that the inner components of most laptops within a certain price range don’t vary enough to make a difference. Because of that, you should choose a design and style that suits your personality over specifications. Of course, if you are a gamer or spend a lot of time editing high definition videos on your laptop, you will need to look more closely at specs – but if that is you, you probably already know that!
The good news is that in 2015 you can get a lot more laptop for a lot less money than you could even a few years ago. So if you plan to replace your old laptop this year, do a little research, consider the ways you will be using the laptop, and find one that suits your personality.
